Welcome

Hi there! And thank you for taking the time to peek at the Visual Hues Photography blog! Seeing the images so big on the screen just makes me smile from ear to ear – hope you like them too!

I’m Janet and I’m a portrait photographer based in Calgary, Alberta. I truly believe I am one of the luckiest people out there having the job I do. I meet the most wonderful people, share the special moments in their lives and get to see their families grow and expand. And to top it off I am rewarded with their smiles, tears and compliments when they see the beautiful art we’ve created featuring THEM. So fun!

Have fun touring around. My website link is at the top of the blog where you can see more images and lots of helpful information. You can use the archives tab to find blog posts from previous months. And there is a link to our website where you can find out lots more information. I look forward to meeting you and the precious ones in your life … whether they are brand new, just growing up, around for a while, or not even arrived yet!

Thank you for letting me do what I love. Hope to hear from you soon!

Janet

THREE GENERATIONS – Calgary Family Photographer

I’ve had the pleasure of photographing this family on different occassions before, so what an honour for me to photograph the even bigger family as they were celebrating a milestone birthday for their stunning mother and grandmother.  And I’ve said it before and you know I’ll say it again, I just love multi-generation photo sessions like this.  Grandparents, children, aunts, grandchildren, parents, sons and daughters — we all mean so much to each other and these are images I hope they can have in their home for a long time to come.   Thank you so much for inviting me to your home and letting me move your furniture all over the place!!!   Enjoy your photos!

DEAR FRIENDS – Calgary Family Photographer

On the weekend we had to say a teary farewell to a family we have grown so close to over the past three years.  It was that long ago that Hailey, just 16 months old, was playing in the ‘big park’ near our home and noticed a very cute blond boy by the monkey bars.  The appeal of someone her own size started a close friendship with a family that we are so grateful for.  They happened to have moved in just around the corner from us and we have spent countless hours and days and visits since then.  Our neighbourhood is truly an amazing one full of fun and caring families and the Horns fit in perfectly.

I remember at one point in my life being mad and upset at the number of goodbyes I’d have to say to those I had developed deep friendships with.   Over the years though I’ve realized how lucky are we to have this goodbyes that are this hard to do.  It means the time spent together meant something to us, it made us care, have fun, trust, hope and support and  in some way made us better people.

A couple weeks before our friends left we went for a final photo shoot .   It was definitely a wintry Canadian day and although we were freezing… for this I am thankful.  We know winters are a big part of Canada and I think they will treasure these images enjoying the white stuff that visits us often.   It must have been the quickest family photo shoot ever!  I think we were in and out within 25 minutes as poor Daniel was getting very chilly!  In true bright and beautiful Danish colours, we were able to capture what I considered the traits I treasure most in this family.    Friendly, real, happy, loving.    Simple adjectives but speak volumes.

LOVE TO LEARN – Calgary Newborn Photographer

I love to learn.  I am constantly looking how I can improve my images, add to my technical skills and make my business that much more successful.  There are many ways to do this, but one way is to learn from other photographers.  I have admired Angela Weedon’s work for a long time.  Her images are absolutely breathtaking and every time I visited her blog I just melted.  If you take a visit there, you’ll immediately see what I mean.   I was so inspired by her work I asked if she’d be willing to teach me and she agreed to work with me one-on-one!  I was thrilled!  The experience with Angie was second to none.  I felt my images improving with each hour spent with her.  She was so open with all her own experiences, techniques and skills.  Her husband Matt runs the business side of their studio and he was so generous with his thoughts and time and advice as well.  I couldn’t have come away from my time there more inspired, more motivated or more excited.  Thank you Angie and Matt for your time, knowledge and hospitality.  I hope we can meet again someday!!

One of the days I was there we worked with the sweetest little newborn.  She is not only gorgeous she was very cooperative as well (although now I know many more tricks to make them cooperative now!!!)  Here are some of the images I was able to capture in the beautiful natural light in her studio.  Enjoy!

JOY – Calgary Family Photographer

It’s been a week since I last put up a blog but what an amazing week it has been.   I’ve been keeping busy (and not just from cheering on Canada!!) and loving every minute of it!  Last week I went on to have one-on-one mentoring with a photographer I admire down in Texas… I can’t wait to dedicate a post to that.  And the last couple weeks have had lots of shoots that I am so excited to share as well.

But on to some images!!   Joy.  Yes, that’s what I felt the entire time I spent with this family.  Joy.  It came from watching the faces of the kids as they were twirled on the ice with their mom and dad.  It came from being able to witness the fabulous bond between everyone in their family.  And it came just from being outside and seeing what fun can be had right in your own backyard, so to speak.  The backyard that Dad built into a skating rink for the winter.  I was so impressed!!  This family is one of the nicest you’ll ever meet and what fun it was to get to know them even better as we spent the morning together.

TALK ABOUT CUTE!!! – Calgary Child Photographer

Ahhhhhh!!!!   So cute!  This gorgeous boy and adorable girl are the children of my hairdresser (who I absolutely adore).    We had such a blast at their home.  Mom and Dad have a great sense of style — just look at their stairwell!!  The little girl was pretty much smiles and energy the whole time and her brother took a bit more time to get into it.  One of my favourite parts of a shoot is when there is a shy little one who eventually warms up to me.  The first individual image of the little boy was very near the beginning of the shoot.  He was still wondering who I was and what I was doing there.  But fast forward 20 minutes later and he is full of smiles and giving me the best looks.  I just love that — not only because I have become a buddy, but also because it makes for a wonderful range of expressions in the full set of images.

The last set of images below were taken in the hair salon.   If you would like a hairdresser, and a fun and fabulous one at that, in the Marda Loop area, please contact Salon South Hill and set up an appointment.

SO STUNNING! Calgary Maternity Photography

A stunning mom(of 2) to be!!   She looks sooooo amazing!!!   We hadn’t thought of the more formal look before of the first image, but once we started looking through her closet, it just made total sense… I just love how she looks.

FROM TEATIME TO WORKSHOP! – Calgary Family Photographer

I absolutely love going to a family’s home and taking photos of what they do together as a family.  Hmmmmm, let’s see… if our family got that style of photos done right now, that would be pictures of me being a wolf and chasing after kitty-cat Hailey and bunny rabbit Reuben.  It would meaning shouting “GO CANADA” in front of the TV.  We’d have pictures of Hailey painting all of our toenails in sparkly purple and Reuben surfing on his blanket as we pull him around the living room. (He has great balance!!!)   oh yes and putting princess tattoos all over… I currently have Ariel on my leg.. just above my sparkly purple toenails (and toes).

For me it’s a chance for them to preserve not only the activities of a family that define them as a familybut also the connection between them all.  And of course, I will never leave a session without beautiful close-up portraits so it’s a fabulous mix of images.  For this family, which I felt an instant connection with, that meant twirling around in a ballet outfit, serving tea, reading a very cool anatomy book, caring for a toy snake, playing in a very cool ‘green’ playhouse and then making a house for snake in the workshop.   What a fabulous time.  Thank you for sharing with me!!!

VENEZUELAN ARRIVAL – Calgary Maternity and Newborn Photographer

I just fell in love with this couple.   We had so much fun taking photos of mom’s belly early in the new year.  We chatted and chatted and chatted about Canada and their home country of Venezuela.  We met just in time as the day after our maternity shoot, their little boy arrived!   And so lucky me got to go visit them again just ten days later.   And oh my goodness what a sweet little boy.    Look at his eye contact in the family photo — I was melting…. and not just because we had the temperature cranked in their home!

COUSINS – Calgary Child Photographer

Remember this sweet little newborn from late last year?   Well, he brought his two adorable cousins to his next photo shoot.   The goal?  To get a gorgeous shot of three cousins together.  It’s not quite as easy as it sounds with a typical busy boy, a little girl not quite sitting up on her own yet and a 2 month newborn!   In the end we decided to go with a shot from overhead and here is the result!!    The three moms were sisters and we were able to capture lots of mom and child moments too.

WINNER ANNOUNCED!!

Wow!  It has been a CRAZY week.  Harold and I went to San Francisco last week and had the most fabulous time.  As always though, there is so much to do before and after a holiday to make up for the time you go away.  So I am catching up… thanks to everyone’s patience over the last few weeks as I work through a wonderful holiday season and post holiday season as well.

We have the winner of the $100 Garrison Girl gift certificate!!!    I asked Harold to choose a random number and he first chose a number that I had made a comment on!!!  Too funny!!  As tempted as I was, I didn’t think that would be very nice of me.   So a new number was chosen and the winner is …. Melissa T!!!    Melissa, we will get a hold of you so you can contact Jodi directly.

And for everyone else, if you’re looking for a small, deserved escape for yourself please contact Jodi through the Garrison Girl website.   Jodi is a complete sweetheart … one of those bright faces out there and I’m sure you will thoroughly enjoy your experience!

Here is one of the images I took down in San Francisco at a fabulous organic winery that we fell in love with, Retzlaff Winery.  We weren’t there for the grapes, but I still love how it looked with the sun coming through.  I’ll also keep you posted on some ideas we have with photo shoots in other areas.  One of the first stops may indeed be San Francisco in the fall.  If you know of anyone who lives down there who’d like to have a photo shoot done, just let me know!
